Gap
Also known as: price gap, opening gap
A gap is a discontinuity on a chart where price opens significantly above or below the previous close, leaving an empty area.
Gaps form from news or after-hours moves in markets that close; 24/7 markets like crypto gap less often. Traders watch whether a gap 'fills' (price returns to the prior close) or runs, and use gaps as support/resistance.
