Hedging
Also known as: hedge
Hedging is taking an offsetting position to reduce the risk of an existing one.
For example, holding a long position and shorting a correlated instrument limits downside if the market falls. Hedging trades some upside for protection; it's a risk-management tool, not a profit engine on its own.
