Momentum / trend oscillator
TRIX
A triple-smoothed momentum oscillator that filters out market noise.
What is TRIX?
TRIX is a momentum oscillator showing the percentage rate of change of a triple-exponentially-smoothed moving average. The heavy smoothing filters out short-term noise, leaving cleaner momentum signals.
How it works
Because the underlying average is smoothed three times, TRIX cuts the whipsaws that plague faster oscillators. It oscillates around zero; a cross above zero (or above its signal line) is bullish momentum, below is bearish. Divergence adds reversal context.
How traders use it
- ▸Signal-line crossovers: momentum-shift entries.
- ▸Zero-line cross: confirm momentum direction.
- ▸Divergence: TRIX vs price for reversals.
- ▸Noise filter: fewer false signals than raw oscillators.
Build TRIX without code in Algovex
TRIX is a node in Algovex, trade its signal or zero crossovers, backtest, and export. No code required.
Key parameters
| Parameter | What it does |
|---|---|
| length | EMA length used for the triple smoothing (commonly 14–15). |
| signalLength | Signal-line period. |
Frequently asked questions
Is TRIX a leading or lagging indicator?
TRIX is lagging due to its triple smoothing, but that smoothing makes its signals cleaner and less prone to whipsaw than faster momentum tools. Algovex provides it as a node to backtest.
