Volume Profile

A histogram of how much volume traded at each price level.

What is Volume Profile?

A volume profile is a histogram that plots how much volume traded at each price level over a chosen period, rather than over time. It reveals where the market spent the most activity, the high-volume nodes that tend to act as support and resistance.

How it works

Instead of a time-based volume bar, the profile distributes each bar's volume across the prices it covered and stacks them horizontally. The price with the most volume is the Point of Control (POC). The range containing roughly 70% of volume is the Value Area, bounded by the Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL). Low-volume nodes between them often act as fast-move zones.

How traders use it

  • ▸POC: a magnet and strong support/resistance reference.
  • ▸Value Area: fade edges in balance, or trade acceptance/rejection.
  • ▸Low-volume nodes: expect quick moves through thin price areas.
  • ▸Naked POC: an untouched prior POC as a target.

Build Volume Profile without code in Algovex

Algovex renders a true volume-profile histogram with POC and value-area outputs, including developing value for the current session and locked levels for prior sessions. Build POC-migration or value-area-breakout rules visually, backtest, and export, no charting library code required.

Works well with

Common mistakes

  • ✕Fading the value-area edges on a trend day, the reversion edge only holds in balance.
  • ✕Using the wrong profile period (session vs range) for the question you're asking.
  • ✕Treating every high-volume node as support without context.
  • ✕Ignoring whether price is accepting (trading sustainably) or rejecting beyond a level.

Key parameters

ParameterWhat it does
rowSizePrice-bucket granularity of the histogram.
valueAreaPctPercentage of volume defining the value area (default 70%).
sessionPeriod the profile is built over (session / range).

Frequently asked questions

What is the point of control (POC)?

The POC is the price level with the most traded volume in the profile. It acts as a high-probability support/resistance level and a magnet for price. Algovex exposes the POC as an output you can trade and visualise.

What is the difference between volume profile and a normal volume indicator?

A normal volume indicator shows volume per time bar; a volume profile shows volume per price level. The profile reveals where value was built, which time-based volume can't. Algovex provides both.
