Trend indicator
Vortex Indicator
Two crossing lines that capture trend direction and turning points.
What is Vortex Indicator?
The Vortex Indicator (VI), by Botes and Siepman, uses two oscillating lines, VI+ (uptrend movement) and VI− (downtrend movement), derived from the relationship between current and prior highs and lows, to identify trend direction and reversals.
How it works
When VI+ is above VI−, buyers dominate (uptrend); when VI− is above VI+, sellers dominate. Crossovers of the two lines signal trend changes. The distance between the lines reflects trend strength.
How traders use it
- ▸Crossovers: VI+ crossing above VI− signals an uptrend.
- ▸Trend strength: wider separation = stronger trend.
- ▸Filter: trade only in the dominant line's direction.
- ▸Confirmation: pair with momentum or structure.
