Funding rate

Also known as: perpetual funding, funding

The funding rate is a periodic payment exchanged between long and short holders of a crypto perpetual futures contract to keep its price near spot.

When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts (the market is long-skewed); when negative, shorts pay longs. Extreme funding can signal crowded positioning and potential squeezes. It is a widely watched crypto sentiment gauge.
