Bear market

Also known as: bearish, downtrend market

A bear market is a sustained period of falling prices and pessimistic sentiment, often defined as a decline of 20% or more.

Bear markets reward short selling, hedging and capital preservation. 'Bearish' also describes a directional bias: a bearish trader expects prices to fall. Rallies within bear markets are often sharp but short-lived.
